A few months ago, we launched an incredible initiative – bringing journalists from diverse backgrounds to the Aish World Center for roundtable discussions. This visionary program was spearheaded by our Director of PR, Raphael Poch, with the goal of fostering meaningful dialogue about Israel and the Jewish people.
This past week, we hosted a fascinating discussion inspired by an op-ed written by former Jerusalem Post editor Yaakov Katz. In his article, he challenged the press corps to reflect on whether they had properly scrutinized the government’s security assessments before October 7th. He pointed out that every time concerns about Hamas were raised, officials reassured reporters that the threat was contained. Katz wondered: If journalists had probed deeper and amplified the risks, could greater awareness have led to a different outcome?
For the first time, we were also joined by a government spokesperson – Dean Elsdunne, the international spokesperson for the Israel Police. Dean, who grew up in Florida and served in an elite police unit, brought invaluable insights to the conversation. Aish’s own Chief Communications Officer and Global Spokesperson, Jamie Geller, and Aish Educational Visionary Rabbi Daniel Rowe added to the dynamic exchange, making for a truly thought-provoking discussion. Friendships were forged, perspectives were challenged, and the conversation continues.
Right after Shabbat, I flew to New York for a very special occasion. Last year, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, reached out to ask where he should spend Shabbat while in Manhattan. I recommended an up-and-coming congregation called The Altneu. That Shabbat, he joined me along with Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion for services at their temporary location in The Pierre Hotel. I remember sitting next to Altneu member, Ranan Aegis, who shared that many in the community wouldn’t be engaged in Jewish life if not for this unique synagogue.
Fast forward a year, and The Altneu has moved into its very own building – an achievement made possible by the incredible dedication of Aish partners Alexander and Diana Tsigutkin. The grand opening was deeply moving, attended by Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, alongside American leaders and dignitaries. The highlight for me was hearing Rabbi and Rebbetzin Goldschmidt speak together. Their passion and commitment are the foundation of this vibrant community.
As I listened to the speeches, I was struck by how The Altneu embodies the very essence of Aish’s mission. They saw a need and took responsibility. They built a space dedicated to bringing Torah to Jews who might not otherwise have a place to connect. And above all, their work is infused with love- love for fellow Jews, love for Torah, and love for our shared future.
Responsibility. Wisdom. Love. These are the pillars of every successful Jewish initiative. They are also the very values upon which Aish is built. That’s why it was no surprise to run into Aish Ha’am candidate Lizzy Savetsky- this is her shul! Wherever you turn, Aish Ha’am candidates are strengthening Jewish life and building the future of our people.
I urge all of you to join us in this mission. Stand with us. Vote at aish.com/vote and help us build a stronger, more united Jewish Nation..
